Stephan Maze Georges
“My grandmother gave me the best gift imaginable,” says fashion designer Stephan “Maze” Georges. “She taught me how to sew.” As a child from a traditional Haitian family, Maze learned to sew at the age of 8. Maze later went onto high school at Boston Tech, which became his introduction to break-dancing, skateboarding and graffiti.
Street art gave Maze a new artistic outlet, and he built a reputation as one of Boston’s finest graffiti artists. Never far from clothing design, by his senior year, Maze had designed his first production piece, a snowboarding jacket for Toolshed. After a year of making one-of-a-kind pieces, Maze attended Mass Art, majoring in graphics and special effects. He then moved to New York City and fell into the film business.
However, never one to lose his focus, Maze returned to his true love and started designing innovative bags, jackets, sneakers and jeans as part of NIKE’s Advanced Concept Team. There, he was invited to participate in a cutting edge project with Nike’s Innovation Kitchenwhich led to Maze’s laser-cut Air Force Ones.
Shortly after the release of the shoe, Maze was introduced to Stash, a New York graffiti icon and storeowner of Recon. Maze became one of Recon's head designers before finding Kidrobot, where he worked as the head of apparel design.
In 2009, Maze heads off to start his own line of bags and specialty items.
Ever passionate, Maze’s optimism is contagious. “The sky’s the limit. The art will never stop.”
